In a study by Ruijie Wang et al. (2024) researchers from Bournemouth University explored how different formats of responsible gambling (RG) information on gambling websites affect usability. Conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, the study used RealEye to gather and analyze data on how users interact with RG information.
The choice to use RealEye was influenced by several factors:
Upon consenting, participants engaged in a browsing task where they visited six different gambling websites. Each participant viewed them in a counterbalanced order, spending up to 5 minutes per site. During this time, they were instructed to actively search for RG information.
RealEye facilitated the collection of eye-tracking data in real-world settings, capturing participants' fixation patterns on Areas of Interest (AOIs) defined on RG content such as banners, icons, and text (with and without links). This allowed researchers to analyze metrics like dwell time (duration of fixation) and Time Taken to First Fixation (TTFF) across different RG formats.
Findings indicated significant differences in participants' attention to RG banners compared to icons and text, highlighting the effectiveness of certain visual formats in attracting user attention.
RealEye had an opportunity to meet one of the authors, Ruijie Wang, at the ACM ETRA 2024 Conference.
During a short interview at ETRA, Ruijie Wang shared insights into the decision-making process and the study's objectives. She emphasized the challenges of conducting research during the pandemic, mentioning:
