YouTube’s Clip feature is a valuable tool that enables users to capture and share short video snippets. However, a study by Salsabila Larasati et al. (2025) using RealEye's eye-tracking has uncovered challenges users face in finding and accessing this feature. Conducted by researchers at Universitas Sriwijaya, the study provides critical insights into user behavior, attention patterns, and emotional responses when interacting with YouTube’s interface.
Understanding User Attention on YouTube’s Clip Feature
The study involved five respondents performing tasks such as logging in, searching for videos, and locating the Clip feature. RealEye's heatmaps, gaze plots, and attention & emotion graphs, were used to analyze their interactions.
Key findings include:
Attention Gaps: Users had difficulty locating the Clip feature, as it is nested within the three-dots menu (⁝) under the video player, making it less visible.
Confusion Indicators: Heatmaps and gaze plots revealed scattered attention around the video controls rather than the actual Clip feature location.
Emotional Responses: The attention & emotion graphs showed higher levels of surprise than happiness, indicating unexpected difficulty in navigation.
Heatmaps, Gazeplots and Attention & Emotion charts of all participants performing Task 1.
Why Eye Tracking Matters for UX Evaluation
Eye tracking provides a unique window into how users engage with digital interfaces. This study demonstrated how RealEye helps identify usability issues that traditional UX testing methods might overlook.
Key Benefits of Using RealEye for UX Research:
Visual Attention: Measures where users look, how long they focus, and what elements they ignore.
Emotional Insights: Analyzes facial expressions to determine user surprise or smiling.
Real-World Application: Tests conducted on actual users provide actionable feedback for UI improvements.
Recommendations for YouTube’s UI Improvement
Based on the findings, the study suggests:
Making the Clip Feature More Visible: Relocating it outside the three-dots menu to a prominent position.
Enhancing Navigation Cues: Providing tooltips or animation to guide users towards the feature.
Simplifying the Interface: Reducing unnecessary elements that distract users from key functions.
Final Thoughts
RealEye proved to be an essential tool in uncovering usability challenges in YouTube’s interface. By using the eye-tracking, companies can refine their digital experiences, ensuring users interact seamlessly with their platforms.
For UX designers and researchers, integrating RealEye into user testing strategies can provide deep insights into navigation issues and behavioral patterns, leading to more intuitive and engaging digital experiences.
